If Character.AI has stopped giving you the roleplay you want, the useful question is which app will. We can only answer for the nine we chatted with, paid for and read the bank notice from. Here is that ranking, and which one to pick for what.

Have we tested Character.AI itself?

No. Character.AI is not one of the nine apps we reviewed in October 2026. We have not sent it our six messages, have not paid for a subscription there and have not seen a card notice from it. Anything we said about its filters, its memory or its prices would be a guess, so we are not saying it.

What this page can do is the other half: nine apps we did test, all with the same six messages and the same content test, eight of them paid for a month with our own cards. Their scores, prices, coin rules and merchant names come from our own screenshots and statements, not from the apps’ marketing.

What should you watch for in an unfiltered app?

Two things decide whether a “no filter” app is actually usable. The first is a content control you can see and set — Ourdream has a Lust Level slider that goes to “Unhinged”, Kindroid keeps an NSFW Engine switch off by default until you flip it, Xotic has an Explicitness setting with four stops. The second is what the app does to your request after you make it: Secrets accepted a nude request and then rewrote our video prompt to add explicit terms we never typed, which we only found by reading the video file’s metadata.

The money is the other trap. Ourdream bills coins per message on the free plan, Xotic prices pictures at 50 XOT and a 5-second video at 250, DreamGF charges 2 tokens a photo. SpicyChat is the outlier: the $19.95 plan we paid for gave unlimited messages and in-chat pictures with no coins anywhere.

Graded “good” when the reply did the job, “meh” when it half did, “miss” when it got it wrong, and “No reply” where the app never got that far — Candy’s free chat locked after five messages, so rounds five and six have no answer. Free-round winners are the ones we wrote down at the time; the paid rounds have no written winner line, so every app we graded “good” shares the round.

What should you check before you switch?

Read the content control before you pay. Kindroid’s NSFW Engine is off by default; SpicyChat’s image NSFW switch is too.
Check the statement line. We photographed seven: Secrets is the cleanest, Candy and DreamGF print their own web address.
Count the cancellation screens. Secrets and SpicyChat take two; DreamGF takes five.
Decide whether coins are acceptable. Ourdream, Candy, GirlfriendGPT, DreamGF and Xotic all sell media by the coin or token.

Secrets scored 8.3/10 across our four test areas and is the app we would pay for again. If the reason you are leaving Character.AI is filters, Xotic had the best-written character of the four apps in our 20 October paid run and explicit video presets, and Ourdream has the most permissive settings we saw.

Which alternative is cheapest if I want to roleplay a lot?

Which of these puts a discreet name on my bank statement?

Do these apps check your age?

Mostly not, in our test. Only Nomi showed a check — a US regional prompt that appeared when we asked for a nude photo — and we skipped it and got the picture anyway. Secrets, Ourdream, Candy, SpicyChat, GirlfriendGPT, DreamGF and Xotic showed nothing; Kindroid prints “adults 18+ only” at the end of its creator but asked for no proof.
